Creating one community
Hans Christian Anderson wrote, "Where words decline, music speaks." As a cantorial soloist, I see how music can create community and invite people together at times when spoken words lack the power. Many of us make a big deal of an effort to attend a house of worship regularly, hoping that the rabbi/minister/priest's sermons will touch us, delve into our souls or staff us connect to power greater than ourselves. Some preachers are able to do that with words alone. For me, it's always been about the music.
I do as one is told to JewishRockRadio.com and Christian FM looking for inspiration. I've attended church with my neighbor for the homage band, and shared my music with her family. And when I'm not singing and playing at the synagogue in Anchorage St. Lucie, I travel to temples elsewhere to share the Shabbat (Sabbath) advice where inspirational music speaks the words I cannot find. Whatever lyrics are being sung, and whomever they intimation, the engendered camaraderie transcends the bounds of everyday upper classes.
