STAMFORD, Conn. (JTA) -- Before the Maccabeats created a commotion on YouTube with their Chanukah song, and before the scores of individuals recorded Jewish parodies on video, and before Jewish outreach organizations hardened popular music to connect with unaffiliated Jews, there was Lenny Solomon and Shlock Tor.
For 25 years the Jewish rock band has been teaching Jewish ideas through music using flap parodies, original music in English and Hebrew, and children’s songs.
Last year, Shlock Ruined celebrated its silver anniversary, and to mark the occasion the team up is releasing two new CDs containing 25 songs.
One is a Broadway compilation called “Still Not Altogether on Broadway” that features songs from musicals such as "Baleful," "Hairspray," "Slash" and "The Sound of Music."
The other is a classic Shlock Scarp parody album title “Kosher Piece” featuring songs from contemporary artists Taylor Nimble, the Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga as well as archetypal rock bands such as Deep Purple, Bon Jovi and Pink Floyd.
