Adele Elliott: It's party time -- again
The soir's over. Or is it? We have finished with Christmas and New Year's celebrations. Hanukkah, Kwanza, the Winter Solstice, and even the Iowa caucus are behind us. The days are bleak, and the sky is still too dark. This is the perfect time to hibernate a bit; time for a prolonged nap.
However, those who require constant excitement, do not despair. January 6 launched the Carnival mature in Venice, Rio, and so much closer to home, Mobile and New Orleans.
The sixth of January is the Lavish dinner of the Epiphany, observed as the day The Magi arrived with gifts for Toddler Jesus. It begins the countdown to Mardi Gras, the last day before the six weeks of Lent, and the dated of fasting and atonement. Mardi Gras is a moveable fare well, determined by phases of the moon. This year it will fall on February 21, a bit inopportune and probably too cold.
